The Origin and the Purpose of Natya as stated in Bharata’s Natyashastra:

The word Natya (नाट्य) is used in the general sense of Drama today. However, this same term has a different context and scope in ancient Indian literature and Rhetorics. Natyashastra considers Natya as a comprehensive audio-visual art form that includes Drama as well as, dance (नृत्य), vocal music(गीत) and instrumental music (वाद्य). However, the dance and music were treated as secondary to drama and were used to adorn the main form of drama. Hence, the topic of the origin of drama as discussed in Natyashaastra is not only about the origin of drama but also about the origin of this comprehensive art form call Natya that includes dance also as the eminent part.
Historians trace back the origin of drama to the Dialogues or the Samvaad Suktas in Rigveda. Natyashastra gives a detailed account of the origin of Natya in the form of a legend or a tale.

In the Tretayuga, when miseries and evil deeds had rolled over the lives of the ordinary people, Indra and the other Gods requested the Brahma to create such an instrument with the purpose of entertainment as well as  enlightenment, the instrument that will have the essence of the Vedas, still it should easily available and understood by the common people.

Brahma  then created the Natya Veda by amalgamating the Words from the Rig Veda, Song from the Sama Veda, the gestures or the mudras from the Yajur Veda and the Rasas or the emotions from the Atharva Veda. This science was then imparted by Brahma to Bharata and to his hundred sons. After learning this Shastra, the first play as per these instructions, depicting the story of the Amruthamantana was staged at the festival of Indradhvaj and the presentation pleased the gods. But a mishap occurred. The defeat of the Danavas enacted by the actors annoyed the actual danavas so much so that all the actors on the stage were dumbfounded by the asuras by casting a magical spell.
Kuchipudi performance opening-
Artists holding Flagshaft and curved stick

The Indra, then bestowed the actors with a Jarjara, his flag-shaft-like weapon to ward off all such mishaps from happening. Even today, in some styles, Jarjara or the Indradhvaja is worshipped as the essential opening ritual.  Indra also directed Vishwakarma the divine artisan to construct a Natyashala or an auditorium for this purpose and Brahma advised that this form is for gods as well as for danavas. Brahma gave the actors Kutilaka, the curved stick. This curved stick is observed in the traditional Sanskrit drama in the hands of Vidushaka and is also observed today in the Kuchipudi dance-drama form.

Lord Shiva, the cosmic dancer, taught Tandu his assistant the art of vigorous dancing which was later identified as Tandava.
This drama presentation included the three vrittis or the styles of presentations namely; the Bharathi vritti that is the use of words or dialogue, the Satvati or the presentation on sattva or intense emotions and the Arabhati, use of the energetic movements. The lack of the feminine grace was observed, and the Brahma asked to include the fourth style or vritti called as Kaishiki adding that This style cannot be practiced properly by men except with the help of women. Brahma then created the twenty-three apsaras for this purpose. These apsaras were then taught 'Lasya', the art of dancing gracefully by Parvathi who taught Ushas, the daughter of Banasura to propagate it on Earth. Further, the rules of Natya were compiled by Bharata in the form of verses in a text called the Natya Shastra.
Inferring from the story:

The above story can be analyzed and interpreted to infer following hints regarding the earliest form of Natya.

1. Natya originated and developed in the religious premises such as drama presentation at the Yagya ceremony.

2. Initially, Natya may be an unorganized and spontaneous folk form in the beginning, however, royal patronage further shaped this form and it was then studied by the scholarship and presented in a sophisticated rule-bound format.

3. Natya is mentioned as सार्ववर्णिक वेद. Natya may have been performed by the menial or lower caste who had no inhibitions of social taboos, but looking at its entertainment and the content value was adapted by other Varna’s as well.

4. Bharata can be that school of sages which gave a sophisticated elite form to the presentation of drama as well as formalized the education of artists.

The physical, psychological and intellectual benefits of Kathak learning

The aim of a performing art like dance is entertainment of the audience as well as the bliss of the dancer himself. Learning a dance style itself is a journey that benefits on every step. Even if one learns the dance style for the joy of dance, the learning process boons him with numerous allied benefits and Kathak dance form is not an exception. Following are some benefits of kathak learning as well as performing.

Physical benefits:

Dance in general is a great form of exercise that keeps your body in shape. Additionally, kathak as an individual style benefits immensely to the performer.
  1. The Basic स्थानक or standing position of Kathak is in itself an ‘Asana’. It involves straight alignment of spine and neck as well as pressure on both the hands right from arms.
  2. The Nritta part of kathak involves rhythmic and harmonious movement of every body part. This includes not only hand and leg movements but many subtle movements. Neck movements and jerks especially while coming on sam, wrist movement which are called as Kalai etc. Hence, nritta part of Kathak can be termed as complete body exercise.
  3. Dol is performed in the thaat part of kathak. This is a unique body movement that improves balance of the body when dancer tries to sway his or her complete body in a circular direction rhythmically with the feet fixed at one place.
  4. Tatkar is an integral part of kathak. Tatkar involves complete leg exercise, giving stress on hips, calves and knees.
  5. Taiyari or proficiency in kathak demands countless Riyaz. This practice sessions increase stamina and are a complete form of work-out.
  6. Kathak performer also communicated and recites (Padhant) while performing. This improves breathing capacity.
  7. Lifts or Chari are sometimes used in the nritta part. They work as an aerobic exercise.
  8. Bhramari or Chakkar is speciality of Kathak that improves balance and stamina.
  9. Riyaz of kathak makes you light-feet and increases flexibility.
  10. Various systematic movements of body parts are used in kathak that are technically called as Shiro bheda (Head movements), Greeva bhed (Neck movements), Drushti bheda (Eye movements), Bhrukuti bhed (Eyebrow movements). These movements are as good as Yogic exercises.
Psychological benefits:

  1. Kathak learning helps in personality development. As a dancer and performer, you learn to carry yourself gracefully.
  2. Kathak improves concentration. Kathak movements require harmony and coordination of hand – feet – eye – neck movements together. This improves concentration.
  3. Bhav anga of Kathak is a therapy in itself. While presenting a Nayika, dancer goes in to the skin of the character and experiences the emotions. This is a stress busting release of emotions known as catharsis.
  4. Riyaz of Kathak induces meditative stage when dancer immerses himself in to the harmony of rhythm and movements.
  5. Kathak learning gives the dancer the aesthetic bliss that is the bliss resulting from the beauty, the beauty of body movements, the beauty of rhythmic patterns, beauty of emotions and the beauty of harmony.
  6. Learning process of Kathak gives one self-discipline and teaches one to strive for accuracy.
  7. Kathak Riyaz involves footwork in a constant fast speed. This Riyaz of tatkar gives you trance-like state and is considered as good therapy for anger.
  8. Group choreographies are major part of modern Kathak learning and performing. Performing in a group teaches you about the mutual understanding and team work.
Intellectual benefits:

  1. Kathak learning improves concentration.
  2. Emotional intelligence and Bhav Anga.
  3. Kathak learning and performing brings Intellectual Stimulation. Kathak compositions are set in rhythmic cycle of taal. Dancer needs to perform number of movements in a particular speed and reach sam. This encourages alertness and quickness.
  4. Sequential learning in Kathak is beneficia
    l for brain
  5. Learning of patterns of body movements as well as rhythmic patterns on bols is beneficial for brain.

  6. Kathak learning stimulates both right and left-brain development with the bhav anga and taal anga learning.  Right and left-brain development, leads to holistic thinking.

Dance vanishes; therefore,....documentation gives the dance the defence it needs against the accusation of being too trivial.” [2]

Kathak: The temple tradition and the court tradition:

Kathak: The temple tradition and the court tradition:

Kathak is also known as Natavari, the dance of Nata, the musicians, dancers, actors who preserved the tradition of dance and drama in North India for generations. They were the story tellers, literally Katha-ka's and entertainers. The legacy of dance in north India is preserved through the generations of these Kathak's or Nata's or the story tellers. The history of Kathak can be divided broadly in two parts. The time period before the 10th century and post 10th century.

The temple tradition:

The pre-10th century period can be roughly called as temple tradition period of Kathak. This was golden period for the Nata's. They were associated with many temples and religious institutions where they spread spirituality through their devotional dance. They used to train the Devdasi's and Kathak was part of the worship. They were also appointed by the Kings not only to perform at the royal temples but also to train the prince or princess in this beautiful form of worship. Some performed individually in temples.

The content of the dance was devotional and the adherence to the tradition of Natyashastra was strictly followed. Various traditional festivals were filled with the devotional storytelling of these Kathak's. They recited and performed stories from Ramayana, Mahabharata and Purana's. The Kathak in this period was still far from erotic content and was not considered vulgar. The dancers had social status and respect.

Even the costume of Kathak in this period was as per the suitability of the content or the traditional North Indian costume of Chaniya Choli.

The court tradition :

The period after 10th century, witnessed Islamic invasions. This was the deteriorating period for the dance forms in general and Kathak in particular. The invasion suddenly increased the problems of bread and butter for the people and hence lead to no scope for development in art. The dancers had to dislocate and wander in search of resort. The invader rulers did not respect the local art forms and instead transformed them forcibly as their means of erotic entertainment. This period had huge influence on Kathak. It was transformed to the roots. It was customized as to be presented in the courts. The court dancers were encouraged for erotic gestures. It was this period when this style was taught to the court prostitutes and then for a long time it was labelled as their dance. Even the costume of the dance changed to Mugal style Kurta, Salwar, Dupatta and a cap.

Although, the dance was socially deteriorated and was no more respectable, some of the parts of the style are the boon of this period. The Lucknow Gharana emerged and developed from the end of 18th century in the court of Nawab Vajid Ali Shah. The Abhinay part of Kathak was rejuvenated under his rein. Gatnikas was developed in details and innumerous types of Gat's were added to the tradition. Today's form of Kathak owes much to this development period. In this court period, even the rulers encouraged competitions or Jugalbandi's between the Dancers and Tabla players. This gave rise to many special variations of taal compositions such as Farmaish. Even in the british period, there was no impressive development in Kathak.

Even in this invasion period, some dancers preserved the original Kathak tradition in the courts of Hindu rulers. This preserved tradition is still seen in the style of Jaipur Gharana. Kathak tradition also remained in the form of North Indian Folk styles such as Raas, Kajri etc.

Today's Kathak is the outcome of both the temple and court tradition. Although this transformational period had deteriorated the social status of Kathak in past and has influenced immensely on its original form, we can not deny that the variety of the content in today's Kathak is also result of the same transformational period.

Influence of Krishna’s Saga on Kathak

Influence of Krishna’s Saga on Kathak

Krishna Chronical: A Fascinating Story of Valor

The stories of valorous stories of heroes inspired the mankind since the beginning of the time. Indian literature, music and even other art forms are extensively inspired by the valor stories of our ancient heroes. In fact, the complete structure of the Indian Literary art is found on the saga of Ram and Krishna. The epics Ramayan and Mahabharat are deep rooted in in the Indian Culture. Additionally, the characters of Ram and Krishna were more popularized by their innumerous versions in folk music, folk dance forms, the sculptures, paintings and many more. For ages, our generations have grown up listening to their stories.
Even in the case, the saga of Krishna is closer to the hearts of people. The extraordinary birth event of Krishna, his miraculous leela’s in Gokul, the motherly affection of Yashoda, Krishna’s mischief, valorous miracles in childhood and teenage love with Radha, Gopis’ grief after Krishna goes to Mathura, killing Kamsa, Krishna’s diplomacy in the Mahabharat War, the astonishing VishwaroopDarshan to Arjun and the desolation at the end of his Avatar.
It is this multiformity in his Saga and the divine blend of Navarasa’s that inspires every artist of every art form to manifest one or the other facet of Krishna through his or her art.
The character of Krishna has a unique intermingling of divinity as well as humanity. Krishna is the beloved Vallabh of Gopis, Kanha to his mother Yashoda, Sakha of Draupadi and Friend and philosopher for Arjun. At the same time, he is depicted as the omnipresent Yogeshwar, Parabrahma, the ultimate ‘Bhagavan’.
Krishna in the Literature:
The deity Krishna is mentioned right from Upanishada’s. Chandogya Upanishada mentions him as the son of Devaki and the disciple of Ghor Angiras. Vyas was the first to develop the complete character of ShreeKrishna in Mahabharat that literally mesmerized the people. Even if Mahabharat was the first work to depict this Character as Poorna Purusha, those were the further works like Harivamsha and Bhagavat Purana that painted these colours of his childhood, Rasleela, his relation with Gopi’s etc. Bhagavat Puran gets the credit to culminate this saga with Nav rasa’s with its sweet style of storytelling. And that was that… in the further time, innumerable epics, poetries, dramas in Sanskrit as well as Prakrit and regional languages were based on and only on Krishna.

The rise of Bhagavat Dharma:
The Bhagvat Purana gave rise to an upsurge of the Bhakti Movement called as Bhagvat-Dharma. This new wave of Krishna Bhakti and Bhagavat Dharma influenced the course of every facet of every art form. Madhvacharya, Valabhacharya formed altogether new Darshana or Philosophy based on Krishna Bhakti. Many Krishna devotees hoisted the flag of Krishna Bhakti all over India. Many royal dynasties gave patronage for the Bhagavat Dharma. The Bhagavat Dharma radiated so extensively up to the 12th century that the Krishna Bhakti as if became the leading belief of the Indian society.
Influence of Krishna on the fine arts:
Such a powerful story, the chronical and the Krishna Bhakti wave had its influence on almost all the fine arts. The paintings of this era had the major theme of Ras Leela. The sculptors mainly depicted the various incarnations and stories of Lord Krishna.
The music and dance were no exception either. The Geetgovind of Jaydeo extended this Madhura Bhakti wave from literature to the dace through his eternal Ashtapadi’s. All the classical dance styles of India even today perform these Ashtapadi’s. All the classical dance styles have their Abhinaya section resplendent with the Krishna Leela’s. This period saw the addition of Vatsalya as a Ras. This addition can be the result of popularity of Bal – leela’s of Krishna.

Krishna and Kathak:
Kathak is the dance style originated in North India and it is believed to be born in the Vrindavan and the nearby places. Hence, it is not surprising that the Saga of Krishna it the soul of Kathak. Kathak is said to be originated from narrating the stories of Krishna. The scholars believe that even the Nritta part of Kathak is also originated from the Ras Nritya. As the legend goes, Vallabhdas, a Kathak dancer in the times of King Akbar created the Ras nritya which further guided the Kathak dancers.
Abhinaya or Bhav part of Kathak is fundamentally based on Krishna. The kathak dancer may begin his performance by a Krishna Vandana, sometimes this Vandana depicts the details of Krishna Roop such as “Kasturi tilakam lalat patale, Vakshasthale Kaustubham” and sometimes, it depicts his naughty childhood mischiefs.
Various Kavitta and Chanda performed traditionally in the Nritta section reflect the Krishna Charitra. From Makhanchori to Kaliyadaman and from the romance of Radha Krishna to their longings, none of the facet of Krishna Saga is left un touched by these Kavitt’s. Radha Krishna Ched-chad is the most popular theme of these compositions. There are long Lamb-chad Chhanda’s that depict Raas Leela such as, Shodash Kala biraje, Vrindavan Kunj etc.
Even the gat bhav’s are traditionally centered around the Krishna stories such as his teenage stories including Makhanchori, Kaliya daman, Gopi- cheer- haran, Hori, also his later velour such Kamsa vadh, Geeta Upadesh etc.
Thumri is so immersed in the colours of Krishna as if the genre itself appears to be originated for depicting the Krishna stories alone. Any romantic episode portrayed in Thumri, be it naughty fights of love or longings in separation, it is portrayed on the pair of Krishna and Radha. There innumerable instances of Krishna Radha romance in Thumri’s such as naughty chhed-chaad in Kahe rokat dagar pyare; or a sweet complaint in Dekho Kanha nahi manat batiya, or mischief in Sham tori bansuri nek bajaun, or the ecstasy of raas in Chalo sakhi aaye Shaam. Many times this romance becomes more profound with the height of devotion it achieves when Radha or the Nayika turns from a lover to a devotee and from admirer to a believer. The mischief of ‘Aaj radhika bano sham tum’ reaches the ‘advait’ or the oneness of Radha Krishna. Thus the Krishna saga has this spiritual arena in Thumri.
Apart from Thumri, many other genres are performed in Kathak like Chaiti, Kajari, Hori, Doha’s, Ashtapadi. All these songs are woven around the chosen Nayak, Krishna.
Apart from the romantic or Kaushiki Vritti Songs, the devotional or Sattvati Vritti is also majorly depicted in Kathak. These devotional bhajans and pada’s are full of childhood mischiefs, the bal leela’s of Krishna, the motherly affection of Yashoda and also the velour of Krishna and devotion towards him. Many such Krishna sketches are found in Bhajans, to list a few, the sweet bhajans of Surdas such as Maiya mori main nahi makhan khayo, the meera bhajans, many bhajans by pandit Bindadin Maharaj himself like Pragate Brij nandalal.
To summarize, the saga of Krishna has unmatched influence on Kathak. It is the Krishna Charitra which is the source of romantic ecstasy, mischievous childhood affection, the peace of devotion and the profoundness of spirituality in Kathak.

Influence of Krishna’s Saga on Kathak
